The 48 Hour Film Project - Team Obnots - 2004 to 2012

The 48 Hour Film Project is a worldwide filmmaking competition where each team has just 48 hours (Friday 7pm - Sunday 7pm) to make a 4 to 7 minute long movie. On Friday, each team draws their team's genre out of a hat. Once every team has their genre, the teams wait for the required elements to be revealed: the line of dialogue, prop, and character (all three elements must be included in their film). I formed team Obnots (an anagram of Boston) back in 2004 and the Obnots haven't missed a year since.

Thanks A Lot, Hobo Sorcerer

Team Obnots materialized just in time to make its ninth 48 Hour Film Project movie, Thanks A Lot, Hobo Sorcerer. We got 'time travel movie' for our genre. We had to use chocolate as a prop, the line of dialogue "You're making a big mistake", and the character 'Ivan or Ivana Wright, Decorator'. The movie tells of a Hobo Sorcerer that gives a man a second chance with his girlfriend by selling him some mystical chocolates. This is version 2 with a few fixes and two extra scenes. You can also watch it on Vimeo!

Here are the outtakes from Thanks A Lot, Hobo Sorcerer. Watch as we waste a third of the day making sure the shoe landing in the poop is just right. Watch as we play around with the vortex visuals and laugh about it.

Working Stiff

Team Obnots is back once again with its eighth 48 Hour Film Project movie, Working Stiff. This is our first movie in HD! We got 'comedy' for the genre. We had to use a chess piece as a prop, the line of dialogue "I didn't see that coming", and the character 'Uncle Hank or Aunt Henrietta'. The movie is about a party ghost that needs to find a job, and also find his place in the world. This is version 2 with a few minor fixes and an extra bonus bit added at the very end. You can also watch it on Vimeo.

Cast & Crew: Bahar Baharloo, CJB, Dabu, Dorothy Bassett, Eve Pogoda, Honey Bee, Ian Lippincott, Jeff Mission, Jess Riggs, Joed Polly, John Dill, Leslie Diamond, Patrick Nichols, Serial Krusher, Tiffany LaRoche, Uncle, and Vinyl Blight.

Working Stiff Outtakes

Here are the outtakes from Working Stiff. There are some amusing unused takes, little bits we didn't end up fitting in the movie, and the usual behind the scenes stuff. And yes, in that thumbnail that is me adjusting the ghost's position by nose-steering.

Cast & Crew: Bahar Baharloo, CJB, Dorothy Bassett, Eve Pogoda, Honey Bee, Ian Lippincott, Jeff Mission, Jess Riggs, Joed Polly, John Dill, Leslie Diamond, Patrick Nichols, Tiffany LaRoche, and Uncle.

High Art

This is Team Obnots seventh 48 Hour Film Project movie, High Art. We got 'heist' for the genre, we had to use a scale as a prop, the line of dialogue "You win some, you lose some", and the character 'Wilma or Winston Weatherbee, gardener'. The movie tells the tale of the true value of a priceless painting, the people that adore it, and the people that desperately want it... and there might be at least one ninja in it. Most importantly, Gir Bullmastiff makes her film debut! This is version 2 with a few fixes. You can also watch it on Vimeo.

Cast & Crew: Benjamin "Shwilly B" Garton, Courtney Jane Brown, Dabu, Dan Strange, Gir Bullmastiff, Irina Peligrad, Jeff Mission, Jess Riggs, Joed Polly, Leslie Diamond, Patrick Nichols, Sarah Pierce, and Tiffany LaRoche.

High Art Outtakes

Here are some amusing outtakes and deleted scenes from High Art. The laser scene with Irina would have ended up in the real movie except it doesn't really fit anywhere with the way we shot the break-in sequence.

A-pearl-calypse Now was made for the 2005 48 Hour Film Project, the second movie by team Obnots. As part of the project we had to use a string of pearls as a prop, the dialogue "I'm not really like this", and the character 'J. Withers, former child star'. And our genre was horror. This movie is about oysters coming out of the sea to reclaim their pearls. Much gore ensues. Obnots won the audience award for our group's showing at the Brattle Theatre for this movie. This is version 2, with a few fixes and additional scenes. You may notice there is no outtakes movie for A-pearl-calpse Now, and this is simply because we put every last drop of goodness into the movie itself, and the bloopers just weren't as funny as the good takes that ended up in the movie. You can also watch this movie on Vimeo.

Cast & Crew: Andrew Sewell, Ben Kram, Jeff Mission, Joed Polly, Leslie Diamond, Jeremy Bruce, Stephanie Bruce and Amanda Laws. Plus additional cast.

Tarts and Hose was the first movie by team Obnots for the 2004 48 Hour Film Project. For this movie we had to use a garden hose as a prop, the dialogue "What's the plan now brainiac?" , and the character 'Spudgy MacGonacle, pastry chef'. Our genre was comedy. This movie is about the rise and fall of a boy band, born from Spudgy's pastry shop, called 350ยบ. We got a lot of laughs at the screening... although due to a series of misfortunes, the opening of Tarts and Hose ended up playing five times that night, when it should have shown twice. This is version 2, with several fixes and such. You can also watch it on Vimeo.

Cast & Crew: Andrew Sewell, Jeff Mission, Joed Polly, Stephanie Bruce, Amanda Laws, and Pat Nichols.

Tarts and Hose Outtakes is just what it sounds like, amusing outtakes from Tarts and Hose. There seems to a decent amount of leftover wacky footage when you're dancing with hoses and brooms, occasionally in public. It's even funnier if you happened to be one of the six people "there".

Cast & Crew: Andrew Sewell, Jeff Mission, Joed Polly, Stephanie Bruce, Amanda Laws, and Pat Nichols.

Joed's current feeling rating: 8.5/10 stars

The Hardly Boys was made for the 2006 48 Hour Film Project, the third Obnots movie. We had to use a bike pump as a prop, the line of dialogue "That's why I don't trust her anymore", and the character 'G. Goforth, competitive eating contestant'. Our genre once again was comedy. The movie follows the grown up Hardly Boys as they attempt to solve a mystery at the New England Regional Sausage Eating Competition. New this year: we finished the movie ON TIME! This is version 2. Check out the outtakes for some extra goofiness. You can also watch it on Vimeo.

Cast & Crew: Andrew Sewell, Annie Berman, Ben Kram, Chyle Crossley, Cory Schuman, David Rodal, Jeff Mission, Jeremy Smith, Joed Polly, Leslie Diamond, Rachel Imbriglio, and Stephanie Bruce. Plus additional cast.

Love Bites

Length: 8:10
File: 54.5MB Quicktime H.264 640X480 30fps, AAC 128kbps
Joed's current feeling rating: 9/10 stars

Love Bites was made for the 2007 48 Hour Film Project. It's the fourth movie from team Obnots. This time we had to use a shoelace as a prop, the line of dialogue "When you come up with something good, let me know", and the character 'Tom or Thea Quimby, gossip'. Our genre was comedy for the third time, which is pure nutball. The movie is about two star-crossed lovers, one a Tranpire, and the other a member of the Ancient Order of the Straightlace. Much ass biting ensues! Oh, and we were on time again this year. This is version 2 with a few fixes and a deleted scene added back in. You can also watch it on Vimeo.

Cast & Crew: Amanda Laws, Andrew Lindsay, Andrew Sewell, Ben Kram, Heidi Fjeldheim, Irina Peligrad, Jeff Mission, Jeremy Smith, Joed Polly, Leslie Diamond, Pat Nichols, Tim Brenner, and Zev Fisher. Plus additional cast.

Yeah, so we had some extra *silly* left over from shooting The Hardly Boys. Honestly, this is probably more fun to watch if you were part of the making of the movie, but hopefully it's amusing either way.

Cast & Crew: Andrew Sewell, Annie Berman, Ben Kram, Chyle Crossley, Cory Schuman, David Rodal, Jeff Mission, Jeremy Smith, Joed Polly, Leslie Diamond, Rachel Imbriglio, and Stephanie Bruce. Plus additional cast.

Here are the outtakes from Love Bites. Hopefully nothing in here embarrasses the lovely cast too much. Andrew and Irina, we laugh *with* you when you trip and fall! And of course it's a "hahaha...awww" sort of a laugh. Watch to the end for an extra scene starring Ben Guaraldi filmed purposefully for the outtakes.

Cast & Crew: Amanda Laws, Andrew Lindsay, Andrew Sewell, Ben Guaraldi, Ben Kram, Giocchina Viaggio, Heidi Fjeldheim, Irina Peligrad, Jeff Mission, Jeremy Smith, Joanne Sewell, Joed Polly, Leslie Diamond, Pat Nichols, Tim Brenner, and Zev Fisher. Plus additional cast.

Joed's current feeling rating: 8.5/10 stars

Team Obnots celebrated its fifth 48 Hour Film Project with our biggest team yet. We made the spy film, Special Encounters. We had to use a receipt as a prop, the line of dialogue "This could get complicated", and the character 'Reginald or Regina H. Higginbotham, diplomat'. The movie is about Roger Connery, a spy, searching for love. There's also an assassin after him! Oh no! We turned the movie in on time again, so that is now three in a row. This is version 2 with better audio and a few other fixes and alterations. You can also watch it on Vimeo.

Cast & Crew: Alli Poirot, Andrew Sewell, Ben Kram, Benjamin "Shwilly B" Garton, Chris Williams, Chyle Crossley, Eve Pogoda, Heidi Fjeldheim, Irina Peligrad, Jeff Mission, Joed Polly, Kyle Fiske, Leslie Diamond, Nick Colangelo, Rod Webber, Tiffany LaRoche, and Tim Brenner.

Special Encounters Outtakes

Date: February 2009
Length: 16:38
File: 116.6MB Quicktime H.264 640X480 30fps, AAC 128kbps

Here are the outtakes from Special Encounters. It is as long as it is because after the first half of outtakes, the second half includes extra bonus dating service interviews (which are pretty awesome). My voice isn't heard in the background very much in this movie, and that is because I had to leave for five hours in the middle of the day to go to Steph's (see Tarts and Hose) wedding! Chris Williams and Rod Webber did the majority of the camera work (with Jeff and Chyle as well), and Team Obnots was the director. So check it out, there are some good laughs in here. Don't ask me how the sight of flowers and chocolates might kill someone though -- I have no idea.

Cast & Crew: Alli Poirot, Andrew Sewell, Ben Kram, Benjamin "Shwilly B" Garton, Chris Williams, Chyle Crossley, Eve Pogoda, Heidi Fjeldheim, Irina Peligrad, Jeff Mission, Joed Polly, Katya Popova, Kyle Fiske, Rod Webber, and Tiffany LaRoche.

Team Obnots returned again with its sixth 48 Hour Film Project movie, Shattered World. We got tragedy as the genre, we had to use a magnet as a prop, the line of dialogue "Yes! I mean, I hope so", and the character 'Mary or Marty Quinzani, second-in-command'. The movie tells of an obsessed inventor that invents the Quinzani Apparatus, a world-changing device that creates bliss and... rice milk? Also, we turned the movie in on time again. This is version 2 with a few fixes. You can also watch it on Vimeo.
